The tablet may be the latest product darling of the tech world, but its success is hindering PC growth.

According to the market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), shipments of PC computers are expected to drop by nearly 8% this year, and by 2015 tablets will overtake the entire PC market, including both portables and desktop devices.

"What started as a sign of tough economic times has quickly shifted to a change in the global computing paradigm with mobile being the primary benefactor," said Ryan Reith, program manager for IDC's mobile trackers, in a statement. "Tablets surpassing portables in 2013 and total PCs in 2015, marks a significant change in consumer attitudes about compute devices and the applications and ecosystems that power them." Read more...

Like many parents with young children, my wife and I think Netflix is a godsend. While its streaming service has never been a good place to find current, high-quality titles, that $7.99 a month gets you truckloads of kids entertainment, including hits from Nickelodeon such as Dora the Explorer to SpongeBob SquarePants.

At least it did up until this weekend. Following the loss of almost 2,000 titles from its catalog a month ago, Netflix's contract with Viacom (which owns Nickelodeon) didn't get renewed, and a few days ago the consequences of the breakup hit its library. For myself and millions of other Netflix subscribers, all of Nick's titles — including the two popular ones I mentioned earlier as well as a host of others — abruptly disappeared. Read more...

Comcast didn't discriminate against the Tennis Channel when it rebuked the network's proposal to be placed in a cheaper and thus more widely transmitted sports programming tier, an appeals court unanimously decided Tuesday

The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit found Comcast rejected the Tennis Channel's proposal out of legitimate business interests, not due to discrimination. While Comcast showed how it would incur additional costs if it moved Tennis Channel to a more widely distributed tier, Tennis Channel showed no evidence Comcast had anything to gain by accepting its proposal, says the court's decision. In the new "People Like Us" music video, three-time Grammy winner Kelly Clarkson assumes the role of a misfit scientist trapped in black-and-white world where colorful people are inspected for being different. Tired of living the plain life, she helps a captive girl escape

Along the way, a few not-so-subtle product placements fill the colorless world with bright spots. A lime green Nokia Lumia phone makes a cameo at the 1:02 mark, and a red BMW Z4 sports car speeds away from the security guards at 2:58

"People Like Us" is a new track on Clarkson's Greatest Hits: Chapter 1, which also included "Catch My Breath" and "Don't Rush" as fresh music amid her older hits. "People Like Us" debuted last week on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart at number 99 Read more...

PayPal Stiffs Teen Who Found Website Bug

PayPal is withholding payment from a 17-year-old German hacker who found a vulnerability on its website, the teen claims.

Robert Kugler is not subject to PayPal's Bug Bounty program because he is not yet 18, according to PC World. Kugler will reach that milestone next March. Kugler told the publication that he found the bug on May 19, but PayPal responded via email that he was not subject to the program.

PayPal representatives could not be reached for comment. PayPal's Terms of Service for Bug Bounty don't mention an age guideline.

It's not clear how much Kugler would have received for identifying this vulnerability. Google has a similar program that pays anywhere from $100 to $20,000, depending on the issue. Facebook pays $500. Kugler has found bugs for Mozilla, and received as much as $1,500 in return, according to PC World. Read more...

It's safe to say that Lenovo's ad campaign for its Yoga 11S is unlike any other for a PC-type device. The only product feature touted in the ad is its ability to switch from laptop to tablet

That feature is demonstrated in silhouette as members of a dance troupe — called The Silhouettes, natch — morph their bodies into objects like streetlamps and cars. "We tried to find a unique way to demonstrate its flexibility," says Jeff Meredith, Lenovo's VP of marketing. Lynne Waggoner-Patton, creator of the Silhouettes, says the idea of a convertible device intrigued her: "When you think it's one thing, it turns into something else. It's like a Transformer toy." Earlier this month, Tesla reported its first profitable quarter as a company, a hugely important milestone that helped send the stock up 25% in after-hours trading from its closing price of about $55, and sent it up more than 50% in the first three days of trading afterwards.

That stock surge prompted Tesla to raise more capital and to repay a government loan nine years early — with interest
